He'd been making noises about a gravel bike for a while and the limited edition Ritchey Outback in yellow caught his eye, however with the yellow sold-out and wanting to run a Di2 grouspet it wasn't going to work. The Outback is beautifully refined in its appearance, even if gravel bikes probably aren't renowned for their elegance. Across the frame the thin-walled Logic steel tubing lends it a classic feel.
Not really fitting squarely into the "gravel bike" category either, the Ascent is much more upright when outfitted with Ritchey's Kyote bars. The 27.5° sweep and 35mm rise give it a much more casual feel than what I'd consider a proper gravel bike (maybe that's what tipped the stranger off to call it a beer-getter.) SKU: FRM-00087C Notify me when this product is in stock Details Frame Patented Ritchey Break-Away® design Material: heat-treated, triple-butted Ritchey Logic steel tubing - TIG welded Rack and fender mounts Ultra-light forged and machined straight 1-1/8" headtube WCS headset included (upper IS42/28.6 - 16mm stack height | lower IS42/30)

Ritchey's new Outback gravel bike is greater than the sum of its parts. January 18, 2021 Iain Treloar Ritchey's a brand with a long and rich history under the careful guardianship of Tom.
Description Tom Ritchey rides about 10,000 miles (16,000 km) per year, and most of that is off-road. Combine that with his more than 40 years of designing and building bicycles, and it's no wonder the Outback has become an icon in the gritty world of gravel and adventure bikes.

December 21, 2020 Over the years, having had the chance to ride a lot of different bikes, I've whittled my personal preferences down to a few assumptions about geometry and materials. Based on these preconceptions, I wasn't sure I'd be into the Ritchey Outback.

Badlands 2020 - Granada, Spain. Start, May 24, 2020 (multi-day) This new unsupported gravel challenge teeters (almost quite literally) on the edge of Europe in the south of Spain. The route is 85 percent off-road, approximately 700km with 15,000 meters of elevation gain and crosses some of the most remote and challenging terrain in Europe.
Grab some popcorn and a cold beer for this one. Here is a wonderfully entertaining interview with Tom Ritchey from the crew at Fahrstil.Tom discusses in length the early days of gravel riding in the Santa Cruz mountains, epic rides through he Sierra Nevada and why the Redwood Forests he grew up around was the perfect birthplace for adventure riding years before his first mountain bike was.
